Woof India

History of WWOOF
The WWOOF program started in the United Kingdom in 1971, by Sue Coppard, a London secretary, under the name 'Working Weekends on Organic Farms'. The intention was to provide people living in London with an opportunity to participate in the organic farming movement occurring in the countryside. Since the establishment of WWOOF in the U.K., the program has expanded to ‘World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms’, and is now in more than 28 countries around the world, with a wide range of farm stay opportunities. WWOOF programs operate independently in each country, so please contact the WWOOF country organization directly for the most accurate information on WWOOFing in that country.

There are more than 18 hosts registered in India. Some of them are mentioned below.

WWOOF India would be one of the newest organization in the WWOOF network which would be functional since 1 January 2007. So far, WWOOF India had been operating and collecting hosts through WWOOF Nepal. For this, WWOOF India must collect hundred hosts and two-hundred volunteers by 1st January 2009. WWOOF India is to play a leading role in the world wide network of opportunities in organic and sustainable farming.

LOCATION : At a walking distance of 2 km from main city
Farm is located at a walking distance of 2 km from main city. Family members work growing vegetables, catering for animals and diary farm etc. This is an organic farm, ecologically very sound as is the whole community of surrounding villages. We have our own cows for milking, bull/ Dzo for ploughing and Donkeys for loading. This land of mountains, with its picturesque location of monasteries, the rich ancient Buddhist monuments, rhythm of musical instruments that accompany the Chanting of Buddhist monks, the traditional folk songs and folk dances, the colourful masked dances of the monastic festival, have come through the ages almost unchanged. My family, the community and Region of Ladakh, depend on 98% Agriculturist. Here I would like to give a brief description of the farming system of our region. "Life was very simple, but people always had enough, and more than anything they were happy", says Tashi Rabgyas, Ladakh's leading poet, scholar and philosopher.

We have our own cows for milking, bull/ Dzo for ploughing and donkeys for loading. We are an agency that aims to protect the unique habitat of Ladakh. We respect the few natural resources available in Ladakh and undertake reformative activates along with other agencies to benefit this cause. We also undertake interactive projects with national and international researchers and students of ecology and help to arrange their research and fieldwork on the conservation of Ladakh's ecology. Specifically: setting up of ecological villages; conserving resources by promoting use of renewable sources of energy; researching and environmental landscaping by specialized volunteers from across the globe; implementing systems of sustainable development for the promotion of energy conservation; promoting techniques of organic farming. ''Promoting Ladakh's sustainable development through volunteering on its organic farms.''
